What should I discuss with my roommate the first time we speak on the phone? How should we decide who brings what?

The first thing you should focus on is just getting to know your roommate. What does he like to do, what does he think he’s going to study, why did he want to go to the school you’re going too, etc…. Once you’re comfortable with each other, talk about your expectations of the college experience. Are you really focused on studying and don’t expect much out of your social life, are you a real party guy or are you somewhere in the middle? Do you expect your room to be a place you will study or will it be a place to get away from the pressure? Do you like a lot of people around all the time or so you want you room to be a place to get away from the crowds? Even if you and your roommate have totally different expectations, the arrangement may work out as long as you are conscious of each other’s needs.

As far as what to bring goes, make sure you know how big your room will be before you lug huge things up. Your room only needs one stereo and at the most, 1 TV. You should each have your own computer. Decorative things like furniture and rugs should be bought once you’re there together so you can split the cost and see what will really fit.
