Adult Education: Career Preparation or Personal Growth

Taking the decision to go back to school can be a life-changing one. After leaving school as a teenager you may have believed that your education had come to an end, but that doesn’t have to be the case.

When you’re at school the first time around, you often don’t appreciate the opportunities that are available to you, as you’re too interested in socializing with friends and members of the opposite sex.

However, as an adult you become acutely aware of how education can help you with your personal growth, as well as in your career.

Personal growth

Some individuals choose to take an adult education course because they are primarily focused on their personal development.

They may have reached a stage in their life where they want to do something different, especially if they have spent a number of years raising a family or stuck doing a job they loathe.

Going back to school gives these individuals an opportunity to challenge themselves and learn something new. They are doing something for their own personal satisfaction, rather than trying to please other people for a change.

Higher education

There are individuals who left school without obtaining any qualifications and have always felt that they missed out on something. Re-entering the education system gives them an opportunity to prove that they are capable of learning.

It doesn’t matter whether or not they already have a successful career – they have always felt that their lack of education has held them back in ways not necessarily related to their job.

Going back to school gives them a chance to fill in the gaps in their knowledge and understanding of the world, as well as to achieve something that they can feel proud of.

Career boost

The fact that taking an adult education course can boost your career prospects as well as enhance your personal growth should not be overlooked, though.

There may be people who are more interested in learning about a particular subject and gaining qualifications so that they can get a higher level education, but for many the thought of being able to get a better job is also appealing.

Clearly, leaving school with very few qualifications can make it difficult to pursue certain careers and so by entering the world of adult education you can train to do something that challenges you and which you actually have an interest in doing.

Conclusion

Most people who decide to go back to school do so because they want to experience personal growth, but also because they want to prepare for a particular career or to increase the number of job opportunities available to them.

It doesn’t really matter what the reasons for going back to school are, though, as long as you’re committed enough to your studies.
