College math courses can be intimidating. Fortunately, you do not have to suffer through these math classes as long as you study well and ask many questions.
Here are a few tips that can help you succeed in your math courses:
Attendance required
If you do not go to class, you won’t know what’s going on. Math classes have a tendency to go fast. If you miss one class, you will start to fall behind immediately. The next class, you may know little about what you are now learning. So, make sure to go to class every time you are required to do so. If you are truly sick or have any other emergency, however, do not feel obligated to attend class.
Ask questions
Some of the people who learn best are those who ask a lot of questions. Almost 99.9% of questions that take place in the classroom setting are good; so, even if you feel like your question is “dumb,” don’t be afraid to ask it. If you really want to know the answer(s) to a question, you have to let it be known.
Talk to your professor
Do not be intimidated by your professor. Most college professors are very helpful and want you to come to them at any time that you feel you have a problem. If you do not want to ask your questions in front of the class, see your professor during office hours and ask him/her then. At this time, voice any concerns that you may have.
Study every night
Most students will only study when the prospect of test-taking is near. This is a bad choice, not only because you will need to cram all of the information at one time, but also because you will not be able to ask the questions that you want. Studying every night, for at least thirty minutes, is the best idea, since you will be able to take in the information slowly and “chew it.” If you have questions, you can ask them before test time.
Do the work
Complete your assignments on time. College math professors aren’t that much different from your past math teachers. They want to see that you can do the work. Practice a few problems every night, even when you don’t have homework, and you will be better versed in the concepts you are learning.
As you can see, succeeding in your college math courses is not impossible. As long as you have the drive and willingness to succeed, you will.
